BMW X5 Tires: Dilemma of Run-Flat v. Non-Run-Flat Tires

If you already own or are considering a 2012 BMW X5 as your next vehicle, you should be aware that it came with factory installed (OEM) run-flat tires. The vehicle was made available with several tire options, ranging from 18-inch all-season (perform well in all weather conditions) radials to 20-inch high-performance summer (perform well in three seasons -summer, fall, and spring – but do not offer much traction in snow or ice) tires. So, if you plan to drive your 2012 BMW X5 for 150,000 miles, all-season, non-run-flat replacement tires can help you realize $1600 in savings!

The cost difference between the run-flat and non-run-flat versions is even more substantial in case of summer high-performance (HP) tires.  The summer run-flat tires have an average life of 20k – 30k miles and they will generally cost around $2000 plus installation to replace. Switching over to non-run-flat summer tires with a similar tread wear rating can save you around $500 per set.  This means a saving of $2500 over the lifetime of your vehicle! Plus, if you live in an area that experiences snow and/or ice, you’ll need a set (perhaps two) of winter tires as well.  That’s an additional $1500 per set for run-flat tires versus $1100 for non-run-flat winter tires!

It is important to note that although a run-flat tires can help get you safely to the next town should it get punctured, the variety of different sizes and types of tires used on the 2012 BMW X5 increases the likelihood that the replacement tire you need may not be in stock at most tire retailers.  That means you may get stuck waiting for a replacement tire to get delivered to your location especially since most run-flat tires cannot be repaired or patched.  Fortunately, a space saver spare tire and jack are available as an option on the 2012 BMW X5 for $150.  We believe that this is a wise investment for all X5 owners.
